Timothy Very, the acclaimed drummer for indie-rock stalwarts Manchester Orchestra, has passed away at the age of 42. The band announced the devastating news on social media on February 14, though no cause of death has been confirmed.
Very joined the Atlanta-based group in 2011, making his mark on all their albums starting with that year's critically lauded 'Simple Math'. His distinctive style and rhythmic complexity were foundational to the band's evolving sound.
Manchester Orchestra's Heartfelt Tribute to a "Beloved Human Being"
In an emotional series of posts across social media platforms, Manchester Orchestra shared their profound grief over the loss of their bandmate. Their initial statement conveyed the depth of their sorrow.
"The entire Manchester Orchestra family has been devastated by the sudden passing of our brother, Timothy Very," the band wrote on X. "The most beloved human being any of us were lucky enough to know in this life. We’ve all been dreading sharing this news as we are all still in absolute disbelief."
Further tributes painted a picture of a warm, charismatic individual whose presence transcended his musical contributions. "Tim was instantly likable and interacted with everyone he met with kindness and warmth. His laugh was infections and he immediately made people feel invited and encouraged. His humor and energy were the very foundation that held together the entire MO universe," they added.
"Strangers quickly became friends and friends became family," the band continued, highlighting his magnetic personality. "He had an undeniable light that was only matched by his dedication and love for the craft that he was clearly put on earth to do. No words can ever do him justice."
The band also emphasized Very's deep love for his family. "Please know, if you are someone who loved Tim, he loved you too. The only thing that Tim loved more than creating music was being with him family. You’d be pressed to find a more joyful dad."
They concluded their tribute with a powerful message of enduring love: "We love you Tim, thank you for loving us. You are a force of positivity that will be a constant presence in the rest of our days."
Timothy Very's Enduring Legacy with Manchester Orchestra
Timothy Very's arrival in Manchester Orchestra in 2011 marked a pivotal moment for the band. Replacing Jeremiah Edmond, Very's versatile drumming and complex rhythmic textures became a signature element, contributing significantly to the emotional maturity and expansive soundscapes of albums like 'Simple Math' and 2021's 'The Million Masks Of God', his final recording with the group.
His influence extended beyond mere rhythm; his drumming infused a dynamic energy and intricate subtlety that elevated Manchester Orchestra from an indie-rock act to a band renowned for its profound lyrical and musical depth. This tragic loss leaves a profound void not only in the band's lineup but also in the hearts of fans who connected with the band's powerful live performances and recorded output, which were undoubtedly shaped by Very's unique touch.
Having been friends with bassist Andy Prince from a young age and having played with Waking Ashland prior to Manchester Orchestra, Very brought a wealth of experience and a distinct creative voice. His final live performance was a homecoming show in Atlanta in November, a fitting last echo of his incredible talent.
