Ellis initially attempted to block Cardi B's nearly $20,000 bid for trial costs. However, her own lawyer ultimately backed down after the presiding judge deemed the amount "reasonable" during a recent hearing.
The security guard had claimed that the "Bodak Yellow" artist waited too long to seek reimbursement and that the submitted bill was "a sham." Yet, the judge overseeing the trial issued a tentative ruling, declaring the costs not only timely but also "necessary" for Cardi B's defense.
Ellis’ lawyer, Ron A. Rosen Janfaza, acknowledged the judge's stance, stating, "My client doesn’t want me to submit, but we’re going to just let it be." The court subsequently adopted the judge’s ruling, mandating the payment of $19,690 to Cardi B for expenses like deposition costs, court reporter fees, and photocopies.
This latest ruling extends a series of victories for Cardi B, born Belcalis Almánzar. At the civil trial, a jury deliberated for only an hour before returning a unanimous verdict in her favor.
Following the trial, Los Angeles County Judge Ian C. Fusselman dismissed Ellis’s request for a new trial in December. In a further development, Judge Fusselman fined Janfaza $1,500 in January for improperly questioning the rapper about alleged "gang affiliation" during her testimony.
