Cardi B has secured another significant legal victory, with a judge ruling that she can recover nearly $20,000 in trial costs from former security guard Emani Ellis. This decision comes six months after a jury unanimously sided with the Grammy-winning rapper and rejected Ellis's assault claim.
Ellis initially attempted to block Cardi B's nearly $20,000 bid for trial costs. However, her own lawyer ultimately backed down after the presiding judge deemed the amount "reasonable" during a recent hearing.
The security guard had claimed that the "Bodak Yellow" artist waited too long to seek reimbursement and that the submitted bill was "a sham." Yet, the judge overseeing the trial issued a tentative ruling, declaring the costs not only timely but also "necessary" for Cardi B's defense.
Ellis’ lawyer, Ron A. Rosen Janfaza, acknowledged the judge's stance, stating, "My client doesn’t want me to submit, but we’re going to just let it be." The court subsequently adopted the judge’s ruling, mandating the payment of $19,690 to Cardi B for expenses like deposition costs, court reporter fees, and photocopies.
This latest ruling extends a series of victories for Cardi B, born Belcalis Almánzar. At the civil trial, a jury deliberated for only an hour before returning a unanimous verdict in her favor.
Following the trial, Los Angeles County Judge Ian C. Fusselman dismissed Ellis’s request for a new trial in December. In a further development, Judge Fusselman fined Janfaza $1,500 in January for improperly questioning the rapper about alleged "gang affiliation" during her testimony.
Cardi B's Unyielding Legal Legacy
This string of court triumphs solidifies Cardi B’s formidable reputation, extending beyond her musical prowess into the legal arena. It underscores her unwavering commitment to defending her public image and financial interests against what she perceives as meritless claims.
The consistent pattern of favorable outcomes, including a $4 million jury verdict against vlogger Tasha K and dismissals in cases regarding her mixtape cover art and a libel lawsuit, demonstrates a clear strategic approach. Cardi B has effectively utilized the legal system to reinforce her brand as a savvy, no-nonsense artist who protects her assets vigorously.
These victories not only serve as a deterrent for future frivolous lawsuits but also exemplify how a public figure can navigate and even leverage legal battles. Her release of "Courtroom Edition" CD covers for her album, Am I the Drama?, further illustrates her ability to integrate these experiences into her artistic narrative, turning potential setbacks into public engagement and even monetization.
