The Courteeners are marking their 20th anniversary with the announcement of their first-ever “best of” compilation, 'God Bless The Band', set to arrive on August 28. The indie veterans also unveiled the reflective new single 'The Luckiest Man Alive' and details for an extensive 2026 UK arena tour, promising an exciting year for fans.
Ahead of their massive sold-out homecoming show at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park, the collection captures two decades of the band’s most iconic tracks. It spans from their seminal 2008 debut 'St. Jude' right through to 2024’s acclaimed 'Pink Cactus Café', all arriving via Ignition Music.
The forthcoming collection is bolstered by two brand new tracks: 'Plus One Forever' and the vibrant, guitar-pop single 'The Luckiest Man Alive'. Both new songs were expertly produced by frontman Liam Fray himself, alongside The Coral's acclaimed legend James Skelly, adding fresh material to their extensive discography.
Reflecting on the milestone, Liam Fray shared his sentiments: “In October it’s 20 years since our first gig, so with a couple of new songs fresh from the studio, the timing just seemed right for a best of,” he stated. “If we mean half as much to people as they have done to us over the years, then we’ve not done too bad. We look forward to seeing you down the front God Bless The Fans x”
In addition to the arena tour, Courteeners will host an intimate launch gig this Saturday, April 11, at Manchester’s beloved Night & Day venue. The upcoming November UK arena tour dates will also see £1 + VAT from every ticket sold donated to the newly established LIVE Trust. This initiative is a crucial part of their levy programme, aimed at supporting grassroots venues and artists across the UK.
Jon Collins, CEO of the LIVE Trust, praised the band’s commitment: “It’s fantastic to see Courteeners supporting the LIVE Trust with a £1 per ticket contribution on their upcoming tour, building on their commitment for the Wythenshawe Park show in August,” he commented. “This donation will directly benefit the full grassroots ecosystem – from venues and artists to promoters and festivals – helping to protect, expand and support grassroots music across the UK.”
Fans attending the arena shows can look forward to support from The Lathums, further strengthening the indie rock lineup.
Two Decades of Indie Resilience: Courteeners' Enduring Legacy
The release of 'God Bless The Band' and an accompanying arena tour is more than just a celebratory milestone for The Courteeners; it's a powerful statement of their enduring relevance in the UK music scene. For twenty years, the Manchester quartet has cultivated a fervent fanbase, often defying critical consensus to forge a unique path defined by anthemic guitar hooks and deeply personal lyrics.
This "best of" arrives at a strategic moment, encapsulating a journey from their explosive debut 'St. Jude' – which famously hit Number One 15 years after its initial release – to their consistent string of Top Five albums. It highlights their evolution while firmly cementing their place as a cornerstone of modern British indie rock. The inclusion of new tracks, produced by Fray and James Skelly, showcases a band still creatively vibrant and looking forward, rather than merely resting on past glories.
Liam Fray's long-standing perspective on critics versus fans resonates deeply here. As he once told NME, “I felt like they came for us with pitchforks on the first record because they built us up so much. It was always going to be difficult to live up to the hype. The first record was well-received by fans but not critics, so then you second-guess everything. If there was no one at the shows then we would have packed it in, but there were loads of people at the shows. I’d much rather appeal to these thousand fans than these six critics.” This philosophy has underpinned their career, building a loyal community that has propelled them to arena headliner status, making this retrospective a testament to their unwavering connection with their audience.
Furthermore, their pledge to the LIVE Trust, building on previous commitments, underscores a profound understanding of the grassroots ecosystem that nurtures new talent. This move not only solidifies their community-minded approach but also positions them as industry leaders committed to the future health of live music, a vital aspect often overlooked by established acts. It's a full-circle moment for a band that started in Manchester's intimate venues, now giving back on a national scale.
'God Bless The Band' will be available in multiple formats, including heavyweight black double LP, retail-exclusive clear double LP, and CD. Deluxe editions featuring an additional 11 tracks will be exclusively available via the Courteeners’ official store.
