Award-winning musician and activist John Legend is set to portray the legendary Harry Belafonte in an upcoming film titled The Road Home. The highly anticipated biopic will dramatize Paul Simon’s controversial 1986 Graceland tour of South Africa during the Apartheid era.
Directed by filmmaker Bill Condon, the picture is currently in production. It will delve into the complexities surrounding Simon’s decision to collaborate with South African musicians like Hugh Masekela and Miriam “Mama Africa” Makeba amidst an international cultural boycott.
Legend expressed profound honor in taking on the role. “I was honored to know Mr. Belafonte as my friend, mentor, and collaborator in the struggle for justice,” Legend stated.

Belafonte famously advised Paul Simon during the creation of Graceland, navigating the expected controversy. He, along with producer Quincy Jones, encouraged Simon to proceed with the approval of the African National Congress, despite many artists’ participation in a cultural boycott.
The film boasts a stellar cast, with Johnny Flynn playing Paul Simon, Thabo Rametsi as Hugh Masekela, and Cynthia Erivo as Miriam Makeba. Guy Pearce will portray Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, a key figure who led a subsequent boycott against Simon.
The original script, penned by Michael Bronner (known for The Mauritanian), is based on a story he co-wrote with South African writer Zakes Mda. This project was initiated at the request of the Hugh Masekela Foundation, underscoring its historical significance.
