Lizzo recently made headlines with an exclusive interview on CBS Mornings, where she candidly discussed her forthcoming album, her personal weight loss journey, and her unwavering decision to fiercely contest ongoing legal battles. The Grammy-winning artist is demonstrating remarkable confidence as she navigates significant personal and professional challenges.
Sitting down with co-host Gayle King, Lizzo offered an intimate look into her current headspace. Her interview revealed a powerful shift in perspective, embracing resilience in the face of public scrutiny and personal growth.
New Music and a 'B****' Attitude
Lizzo's highly anticipated new album is set to drop on June 5, marking a distinct departure from her previous mindset. She shared insights into why she indefinitely shelved her project, Love in Real Life, after two singles failed to chart, emphasizing a renewed focus on her artistic purpose.
“I think that I have been working on an album and I put a lot of pressure on me for a long time. And I think what I learned last year was like, I’m here to make music. I’m here to give music to my fans,” Lizzo stated, highlighting her dedication to her supporters.
The album's title track prominently features the word "B****" and incorporates samples from Meredith Brooks’ iconic feminist anthem and a Missy Elliott track. Lizzo elaborated on her deliberate choice to reclaim and empower the term.
“I feel like what both of those women did was they pushed that word forward in a way that empowered it instead of taking the power away. Like, that’s a word that used to get hurled at women,” she explained, underscoring the word's transformation.
Unyielding in Legal Battles
The conversation also delved into the 2023 lawsuit filed by three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers, which alleged a hostile work environment and sexual harassment during her world tour. While a weight-shaming allegation was dismissed, several sexual harassment claims persist, including accusations that Lizzo pressured dancers at an Amsterdam burlesque club.
Lizzo is actively appealing the ruling on these claims, maintaining a steadfast resolve. When questioned about the possibility of settling the case, her response was unequivocal.
“I’m fighting the case because I know that it’s not true, just like the fat shaming one is not true. It’s an ongoing case, so I can’t talk about like all the details, but I cannot wait for it to be dismissed,” she affirmed. She further expressed her readiness to testify if the case proceeds to trial, adding, “Absolutely. Absolutely. And I would look fabulous while doing it.”
Addressing Her Health and Weight Loss Journey
Lizzo has also garnered attention for her significant body transformation, which she views as an integral part of her personal journey. She openly shared the emotional and physical aspects of this change.
“I released the anxiety I was going through. I released depression. And I also released some weight on my body. I’m not a skinny person. I will never present myself as one. I don’t think I could. I mean, if I came out today as a brand new artist with this body, I would still get the same criticisms I got,” she reflected.
Dispelling rumors surrounding the use of weight loss medications like GLP-1s, Lizzo clarified her approach to health. While acknowledging a brief past trial, she emphasized her current method.
“This weight release was done with a calorie deficit, cardio, protein. But years ago, I tried a GLP-1 for a little minute, but it did not work for me. I’m scared of needles and it just did not work out for me. So, I just didn’t do it. And so, when I decided to do the weight release journey in 2023, which was years after, I was like, I’m going to have to do it the old-fashioned way,” she detailed.
Lizzo's Comeback Strategy: Redefining Resilience
This CBS Mornings interview signals a pivotal moment in Lizzo’s career, showcasing a deliberate and strategic effort to reclaim her narrative amidst ongoing controversies. By directly addressing the lawsuit and her health journey, she exhibits a masterclass in transparency and narrative control, setting a clear precedent for how public figures can navigate intense scrutiny.
Her decision to openly discuss the shelving of Love in Real Life and the renewed focus on her current album demonstrates a powerful artistic evolution. This isn't just about releasing new music; it's about an artist redefining her identity, owning her experiences, and leveraging her platform to communicate directly with her audience, much like past artists who’ve used major interviews to shift public perception during challenging times. Lizzo is not merely reacting to events; she is actively shaping her future, both artistically and personally.
With her new album on the horizon, Lizzo is poised to re-engage with fans, not just as a musician, but as a resilient individual charting her own course with unwavering authenticity.
