Tom Morello's inaugural Power to the People festival is currently underway today, October 3, 2026, at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. Fans globally can stream the hard-rocking highlights courtesy of MS NOW, experiencing a star-studded lineup assembled to champion "freedom, justice, equality and rock and roll."
The festival boasts an impressive roster, featuring 17 individual members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Luminaries such as Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, and Public Enemy are sharing the stage, alongside contemporary powerhouses like Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard and genre stalwarts Dropkick Murphys.
The event also sees a special reunion with drummer Matt Cameron, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, and singer Taylor Momsen revisiting the music of Soundgarden during an early evening set. Adding a unique generational twist, actor/musician Jack Black fronts Jack Sabbath, a teenage Black Sabbath cover band, with Morello’s 15-year-old son, Roman Morello, prominently featured.
Beyond the music, the festival carries a crucial message, especially a month before the U.S. midterm elections. "In a time of hatred and division, this is a festival of unity and solidarity and joy," Morello shared in an Instagram video. He further emphasized the musical breadth, stating, "In a time when there’s a lot of terrible shit in the world, we’re going to rock your ass with some of the greatest folk music, rock and roll music, hip-hop and heavy metal music that you’ve ever heard."
A significant portion of ticket proceeds, plus 100% of net VIP proceeds, will directly benefit VoteRiders and HeadCount. These organizations are on-site to assist attendees with voter registration and provide information on upcoming elections, underscoring the festival's civic engagement mission. Supporting partners include the ACLU, Farm Aid, Rock the Vote, Oxfam, and Trans Maryland, among many others.
Morello's Enduring Vision: Music as a Force for Change
Tom Morello has consistently proven himself not just a guitar icon, but a formidable activist, wielding his music as a weapon for social justice. The "Power to the People" festival is a powerful culmination of his career-long commitment, aligning perfectly with his legacy from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave to his extensive solo work.
This event transcends a mere concert; it's a deliberate, timely intervention into the political landscape. By uniting disparate genres—from folk to heavy metal, hip-hop to classic rock—Morello creates a broad appeal, signaling that the fight for "freedom, justice, equality" is a collective, multi-generational endeavor. The inclusion of his son, Roman, further cements this legacy, showing a clear torch-passing for future activism.
Compared to past politically charged music events like Farm Aid or the various Live Aid concerts, Morello's festival distinguishes itself with its explicit focus on immediate civic action, directly linking ticket sales and on-site resources to voter engagement. It positions music not just as a means of protest or awareness, but as a direct conduit for tangible democratic participation, making it a pivotal event in the current music and political landscape.
