Big Sean discusses mental health and depression

Hip-hop star Big Sean recently opened up about his profound mental health struggles, detailing his battle with depression and anxiety in the wake of his close friend and collaborator Nipsey Hussle’s tragic death in 2019. The rapper, known for his candidness, shared insights during a powerful interview on ABC News’ 'All Access with Linsey Davis', alongside Usher.

In an exclusive clip from the interview, Big Sean reflected on the immense courage it took to speak openly about a topic often considered taboo within the Black community. Despite not intending to be a mental health spokesperson, his personal journey became a beacon for many.

Addressing the perceived vulnerability, Big Sean stated, "I was just sharing what was going on in my life. I didn’t realize that I was being so vulnerable. I wasn’t trying to be a spokesperson for mental health per se." He continued, "I was just expressing how I was going into therapy and experiencing a time of heavy ups and downs, a time of depression."

He vividly described the intensity of his struggles, recounting a moment where "It felt like I hit a wall… and I either had to climb over it, or it was gonna fall on me and crush me." This period, deeper than any adolescent depression, stemmed from losing touch with himself due to relentless work. "I had been so about my work that I lost touch with the person that I was. So, I think that led to a very deep battle of depression, deeper than I experienced when I was like a teenager," the artist revealed.

This arduous journey necessitated a significant shift in priorities for the artist. "I had to take time away from the music industry being my first obligation, and I had to put myself first," he explained. This commitment to self-care is evident in the four-year gap between his 2020 album, Detroit 2, and his most recent LP, Better Me Than You.

During this hiatus, Big Sean also emphasized the importance of enjoyment. "You got to be serious about having fun, because as fast as time goes, we’re here for a limited amount of time," he shared with a chuckle. Reflecting on the lessons learned, he added, "I’m just happy to be here enjoying myself."

Breaking the Silence: Big Sean's Impact on Mental Health Discourse in Hip-Hop

The rap star’s candid revelations provide a crucial perspective on the intersection of fame, loss, and mental well-being within the hip-hop community. Big Sean's decision to openly discuss therapy and depression, particularly in the aftermath of Nipsey Hussle's death, marks a pivotal moment in destigmatizing mental health challenges.

His transparency is especially impactful given the historical reluctance within some communities to address these issues publicly. Big Sean's journey from "hitting a wall" to prioritizing self-care over constant artistic output reflects a growing trend among artists reclaiming agency over their their well-being.

This vulnerability aligns with a broader industry shift, where figures like Kid Cudi, Logic, and others have also championed mental health awareness. Big Sean's narrative not only offers hope but also sets a powerful example for fans and peers alike, fostering a culture where seeking help is increasingly viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness.
